The Smell of Glass - Odor Wheel
Odor Wheel (Glass smells of old birch, a pink salt leaf, and pale rubber…)
The Odor Wheel formally references aroma wheels used in wine tasting. In this work, the collected smells of glass are given a verbalized and sculptural form.
Over a period of three months, I kept an olfactory diary in which I recorded how glass became smell for me. Almost daily, I imaginatively smelled glass and noted the resulting odors. Within this process, I examined which factors influenced my olfactory imagination—such as light, environment, mood, and time of day.
Afterwards, these descriptions were analyzed and categorized according to linguistic criteria. The resulting categories were UV-printed onto three circular glass discs, which can be rotated. Through this participatory engagement, the wheel transforms linguistic data into poetry and imagined smell, inviting viewers to navigate subjective olfactory perception through language, and glass.
