Share Your Nose with Me

Every person has a highly “individual scent profile,” “we have, so to speak, an olfactory fingerprint, a personal scent that is genetically anchored (Müller-Grünow, R. (2018), Die geheime Macht der Düfte. Warum wir unserem Geruchssinn mehr vertrauen sollten. Hamburg: Edel Germany GmbH, p. 98).”
People often only smell themselves when they want to find out how they smell to others. Conversely, people generally do not smell others, as this would violate privacy and break an unspoken taboo.

In Share Your Nose with Me, I make use of this dynamic and offer participants the opportunity to consciously experience, exchange, and share olfactory experiences related to body odor.

This concept further developed into the twin Smell Spheres made of blown glass, which are olfactory perception spaces that invite to exchange molecules with another person through a visible yet transparent barrier of glass.
